The Golden Circle on your first day in Iceland

It is a good first day, provided you do not book an early departure. Most transatlantic flights land in the early morning after a short night, and an 08:00 pickup on four hours of sleep turns the best day of the trip into a nap on a coach. Take an afternoon departure, or have a private vehicle collect you at Keflavík and run the loop on the way into town.

If your flight lands before 07:00 and your hotel room is not ready until 14:00, the loop is the best possible way to spend the gap. Just book the six-hour afternoon tour rather than the full day.

Keflavík is 45 to 50 minutes from Reykjavík. A morning arrival typically has you in the city by mid-morning with a room you cannot get into, which is precisely the shape of day the six-hour afternoon tour was built for: a late departure, 21 pickup points including several hotels and the BSÍ terminal, four stops, and back in the evening.
