What time should I leave for the Golden Circle?

Between 07:00 and 08:00, or after 19:00 in summer. Those are the two windows that miss the coach wave, which builds at Þingvellir mid-morning and reaches Geysir around midday. If you are on a tour rather than driving, the equivalent choice is an early departure or an afternoon one, and the afternoon tour exists for exactly this reason.

The crowd on the loop is a wave, not a level. It starts at Þingvellir around 10:00 and works clockwise, so a tour that runs the loop the other way — Kerið first, Þingvellir last — meets it head-on rather than sitting in it.

Most day tours depart between 08:00 and 10:00 or between 12:00 and 14:00. The early ones reach Þingvellir while the light is still clean and the boardwalk is quiet; the later ones arrive at Geysir as the morning coaches are pulling out. Neither is wrong. What does not work is leaving the city at 10:30, which puts you in the middle of everything.

Driving yourself gives you the better options at both ends. Reykjavík to Þingvellir is about an hour, so a 07:00 start has you walking Almannagjá before the first coach arrives. In June, the other end is even better: leave after seven in the evening and you have full daylight, empty car parks and a machine at Þingvellir that still takes the parking fee. Kerið is the one stop with a limit, since the kiosk works daylight hours.
